AETA, founded in Manila, Philippines in June 2004, has held annual theological education forums and general assemblies. While seeking ways to entrust or cooperate with a third-party organization possessing long-established tradition and authority regarding theological school accreditation, AETA began directly granting accreditation to leader training institutions that participated in or were affiliated with AETA. AETA's accreditation aims to help leader training institutions secure the fundamental qualities and conditions they must possess, while maximizing respect for the specificities suited to the regional contexts where leader training services operate.
After taking on the operation of Chongshin International Graduate School from Chongshin Graduate School of Theology in November 2010, AETA's scope expanded beyond Asia. At the 11th General Assembly in February 2014, the scope of AETA accreditation was expanded to a global level. Furthermore, with the 16th Regular General Assembly in February 2020 as a turning point, the new AETA bylaws were finalized, and accordingly, comprehensive revisions and enhancements to the accreditation manual were undertaken. This signifies the implementation of a practical curriculum that presupposes contextualized theology and contextualized missiology, with emphasis on their application in research and ministry practice.
